Join the Choir

A recent trend for this time of year has been to reflect and hold onto a single word as you head into the New Year. I have friends who have lifted up words like: Enjoy. Opportunity. And Humble.

Truth be told, I’ve never been a New Year’s resolution kind of guy. But I like the idea of a word that sticks with you. One that is poignant and thoughtful as you embark on another year. My reflections have led me to the word I will carry forward—sing.

If you missed worship on New Year’s Day, this was one of the takeaways. Will you sing —even when you are in the valley? If you opened my “With Your Cup” email you know that singing is a gift and calling given to humanity. You have a voice that you are invited to share in praise and exultation of the Almighty. Will you sing?

Now, to be clear, my singing is not amplified! I’ve got a mute switch on my mic on Sunday morning for a reason. And, like all critical elements, George and William have redundant safeguards—they can mute me if I forget.

I’ve never been a great singer. Occasionally I chant the liturgy—but not often. I did so at an ordination once. A seminary professor who teaches liturgy came and told me that she would give me some remedial chanting lessons if I wanted. But, honestly, I think this is part of the beauty. Not that my voice is beautiful. But, there is an authenticity of a faith that is willing to be embarrassed by not being polished.

Singing is about more than just the notes that come out of your mouth and heart. It’s also about who you sing with—who has joined you in the choir. This is one of the other reasons “sing” is my word for the year. Singing is about joining in harmony with those around you. It is about community. And this is one of the very best elements of our life of faith. It is about being together.

My hope for you and for me is that we can dive deeper into our relationships together in the year ahead. I look forward to making new (and capitalizing on existing) ways for us to laugh and love together. Let’s sing together! Maybe we will be off-key from time to time—most likely me, not you—but it is in our shared moments that we embody hope. It is our journey together to offer the most meaning for our lives today and for all of our tomorrows.

So, come, bring your voice, and let’s sing together. In the valleys. On the mountain tops. And every trail in between.
